Apple introduced the iPhone 11 Pro. Just as correctly anticipated in recent weeks, this new range includes two models called iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max, of which the latter benefits, among others, from a larger screen (6.5 “Against the 5.8” of the 11 Pro model).
The main features of the iPhone 11 Pro
iPhone 11 Pro is not a whole new phone. It is rather a refined version of the iPhone XS. Before going into detail, here are the main new features
- New three-lens camera, wide-angle, ultra-wide-angle and zoom
- New 12 megapixel front camera
- Moving forward in the quality of the video
- New OLED display with superior brightness
- More resistant opaque glass backing
- New “night green” color
- Processor A13 Fusion
- iPhone 11 Pro price is $999, and the base iPhone 11 Pro Max is $1,099.
iPhone 11 Pro: the name
There have been several doubts about the name of the successor to the iPhone XS.
The name iPhone 11 Pro emerged with certainty only a few hours after the actual launch of the product. Naming iPhone 11 as a Pro, Apple more or less follows the pattern of the iPad.
In the tablet range, we have an iPad mini, then the model simply called “iPad”, then an iPad Air (which I could define a “mid-range”) and then the iPad Pro divided into one with an 11-inch display and one of 12, 8 inches.
Apple would have eliminated any present and future problems by introducing an iPhone 11 (heir to the iPhone XR) and then two iPhone 11 Pro, 5.8 and 6.5-inch versions, without giving them a name as precise as it happens, in fact, for iPad Pro.
But Apple may have used the name iPhone 11 Pro to dispel future problems and misunderstandings.
Aesthetics and materials
If there were any doubts about the name, there were few in the design.
Virtually all sources thought that iPhone 11 Pro in both its versions would have a similar profile, if not identical, to the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR and so it was.
It is an “all-screen” with the now equally classic front notch for the room and for Face ID.
On the back says there are three cameras, Apple has managed to do a good job even if the effect is not very dissimilar from what we saw in the first renderings…
The external shell is made of stainless steel «Surgical quality», says Apple, with optical PVD coating and response to touch that Apple defines «Incredible».
It is available in new colors: in addition to the sidereal gray and the silver model that accompanies the iPhone series, there is practically always an option in gold coloring different from the past and a completely new version in dark green that the company calls Verde notte.
The iPhone 11 Pro can be submerged for 30 minutes in the 4 meters of water (and not two meters like the iPhone XS) and are mainly protected from liquids like coffee and other drinks. However, the official water resistance rating remains the same as the iPhone XS: IP67
New OLED display
The news starts from the display. Apple explains that it has introduced a display called Super Retina XDR with these new iPhones.
This is an OLED (perhaps the Samsung display called Y-OCTA) ideal for movies and other HD videos, with a brightness of up to 1200 nits (although the typical brightness is 800 nits), supports a wide range of colors, with system-level color management, and True Tone technology, for a more natural viewing experience.
It has a contrast of 2,000,000: 1 (on the iPhone XS and iPhone and XS Max was 1,000,000: 1) and higher energy efficiency.
New Apple A13 Bionic processor
Then confirmed the presence of the Bionic A13 processor, equipped with artificial intelligence now capable of making a million billion operations per second. It is the most efficient processor ever: built with a 7-nanometer process, it uses 8.5 billion transistors; it has an 8-core architecture, is up to 25% faster and up to 30% more efficient.
The CPU integrates two new accelerators for automatic learning and a new Natural Engine designed by Apple, which is the engine of the new triple camera system, the Face ID, of the AR apps.
Apple explains that the integrated chip in iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max has a CPU and GPU up to 20% faster than the A12 chip. Designed for machine learning, it includes a more responsive Neural Engine for real-time analysis of photos and videos, as well as new machine learning accelerators.
The greater power does not reverberate on consumption. Apple says it has used different techniques for reducing energy absorption: for example, there is a function that allows power to be removed from the parts of the chip that are not used, thus allowing only the current to pass through.
All this is also excellent in terms of speed, with performance 20% higher than the previous generation.
The chip is also able to slow down up to 40% with applications that do not need too much power, with important improvements also from the thermal point of view.
CPU performance and real performance
At the time of writing, the actual performance of the processor is not yet officially known. Shortly after the presentation of the iPhone 11 Pro, some tests appeared on Geekbench that would assign a data of 5472 in the single-core and one of 13769 in the multicore to iPhone 11 Pro (not iPhone 11 Pro Max).
This is about 15% more than a classic A12 processor used by the iPhone XS and iPhone XR which mark 4780 and 11250 respectively. Between 10 and 15%, more is what was expected to be the advantage in performance terms of A13 Bionic compared to A12 Bionic.
The data is better than the most recent competitors: Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Exynos 9825 in the same tests obtained 4,532 points in single-core and 10,431 in multi-core, while Huawei’s Kirin 980 obtained 3,289 points in single-core and “Only” 9,817 in multi-core, which in these terms are even below the scores obtained by the A12 Bionic of iPhone XS.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ that gets 11,367 points in multi-core, but still remains below the 13,769 of A13 Bionic, which is, therefore, the fastest processor of the moment
It should be noted that the real performance depends on a series of other factors including the advantages brought by the coprocessors, the GPU and various components such as GPS system or, in the case of iPhone 11 Pro, also UWB which contribute to the usability of the system.
Not to mention operating system optimization. All this will be evaluated when testing the smartphone.
Amount of RAM
Another element to consider when running programs is the amount of RAM. According to the rumors that circulated before the launch, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max should have 6 GB of memory, a quality we now know may be necessary for managing the sophisticated photographic department.
In fact, the first tests that appeared on Geekbench would say that iPhone 11 Pro only has 4 GB of RAM. But since these tests can be easily falsified, it is good to wait for the release of the first devices in this case too.
As for the photo topic, the new features of the iPhone 11 Pro are really many. The basis of the innovations are in the three objectives: 26mm f / 1.8, 52mm f / 2.0 and 13mm f / 2.4 which, combined together, raise the overall bar and allow the introduction of the following novelties together with the technologies of the new A13 Fusion processor
- The new ultra-wide-angle allows you to frame a scene four times bigger
- Night mode to improve photos taken indoors or outdoors in poorly lit environments, for brighter images with less noise and natural colors
- Portrait mode now allows you to choose between wide-angle and telephoto shots, with a wider field of view ideal for portraying more subjects.
- The telephoto lens has a diaphragm with ƒ / 2.0 aperture to capture 40% more light than the iPhone Xs.
- Smart HDR function to recognize framed subjects and calibrate light intelligently.
- Brilliant True Tone Flashes by over 30%.
- Deep Fusion technology to process pixel by pixel photos and optimize texture, details, and noise in each section of the image (available in autumn).
- Redesigned camera interface to view and capture even the area outside the frame.
- Ability to record video without leaving the photo mode.
The enormous leap forward in terms of camera quality is clearly reflected in the videos as well: Phil Schiller explains that the three cameras are calibrated to offer identical exposure and colors and guarantee very smooth transitions when switching from one to the other.
Thanks to iOS 13 there are also new video editing features, also supported by the application ecosystem (at the moment there are over 35 thousand only for photos and videos) that allow you to manage everything from the phone itself.
An example is given showing what FiLMiC is able to do, available only for iPhone Pro and thanks to which it is possible to see not only the different visual fields of the objectives but also to divide the screen and see four video feeds including the front one that acts as a portrait.
This reduces the need to turn the device and do everything at once, recording simultaneously from each room.
This – the app developers explain – is the evolution of the system: using multi-cameras to have multifoliate with different visual angles, which will be excellent especially for documentaries and journalism.
One way, they argue, that will totally change the market.
Also new for the front camera. The new TrueDepth system introduces a 12MP camera with a wider field of view for taking selfies; The innovative Smart HDR feature allows for more natural photos.
Apple emphasizes the most expressive video-selfie ever thanks to the front TrueDepth camera that now records 4K movies up to 60 fps and slow motion up to 120 fps. +
Top LTE network speed
In iPhone 11 Pro Apple has integrated Gigabit-class LTE technology with MIMO 4 × 4 and LAA technology, although frequencies and bands change depending on models and countries of distribution.
According to the SpeedSmart website, tests carried out with major US mobile operators show that the iPhone 11 Pro is on average 13% faster than the iPhone XS of 2018, with measurements indicated for AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint and Verizon.
This data should be taken with some caution and as a general indication. LTE networks do not use the same frequencies everywhere and connection quality is highly dependent on the technologies and choices of operators in each country
Several observers, including the reliable Ming-Chi Kuo, have indicated the increase in battery capacity for the heirs of the iPhone XR, XS Max, and XS.
Since launch Cupertino presents XR as the iPhone with more autonomy than ever, an aspect also emphasized in a funny spot: for the successor is indicated an increase in the capacity of the accumulator.
In iPhone 11 Pro battery is expected to be 3,200 mAh (+ 20%). in iPhone 11 Pro Max you should have a capacity of 3,500 mAh (+ 10%). At the moment we don’t know anything about the battery (something should emerge when the iPhone 11 Pro is taken apart); however, we know that autonomy actually increases.
The performance for processing, graphics, and machine learning does not seem to affect the duration, which on the contrary is superior to the 2018 models: iPhone 11 Pro, says Apple, offers up to four hours more battery life than iPhone Xs, while iPhone 11 Pro Max offers up to five more hours of iPhone Xs Max.
In particular, here is the video viewing data:
- Phone XR 16 hours
- iPhone 11 17 hours
- iPhone 11 Pro 18 hours
- iPhone 11 Pro max 20 hours
Moreover, it should be remembered that iPhone 11 will offer in the sales package the classic 5W battery charger, while iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max are now supplied with a Lightning to USB cable and the more powerful 18W USB-C charger, which allows you to recharge the battery at 50% in about 30 minutes.
One of the most anticipated and proven news in the iPhone 11 Pro (and iPhone 11) was a bilateral top-up or a system that would allow Apple phones to charge devices like AirPods or even an Apple Watch. A few hours before the event in which Apple introduced the 2019 iPhones, the well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claimed instead that the technology would not appear and so it did.
Actually shortly afterward the serial leaker Sonny Dickson has made it known that the components inside the iPhone are there, but they have been disabled via software.
The reason? Mysterious but one cannot but imagine that there have been technical problems that have advised Apple in this regard. To learn more you will have to wait until the next weekend when the first “dismantling” of the iPhone will be implemented.
Other small news
Apple has also put other small changes in the iPhone 11 Pro, some hidden, but which can make the difference in some contexts and which must be taken into account
- USB-C charger in the box with Lightning cable on USB-C for fast charging
- UWB chip for better indoor positioning
- No more 3D Touch replaced by Optic Touch
- Brighter Flash
- Wi-Fi 6 for more stable and faster connections
- The iPhone 11 Pro weighs between 10 and 20 grams more than the corresponding iPhone XS
Where to buy iPhone 11 Pro
Currently, iPhone 11 Pro will be on sale on Apple Store online, Amazon and the main Apple-authorized retailers, whether they are APR or of course Apple Store. At the time of writing, we still talk about preorders.
Speaking of online, our advice is to buy on Apple Store online or Amazon because there are certain times, certain deliveries and all possible guarantees.
At this time it is absolutely inadvisable to buy on eBay because the sellers almost never operate in the regime of the authorized and often sell products that are not certain to have or, at least, do not have certainties about quantity and timing.
Of course, you can always go to a store on September 20th and buy it. At the moment there is no news of particular delays or scarcity of quantities.
Obviously take into account that the right of withdrawal that you can exercise in the case of online, if you buy in a physical store, is subject to numerous limitations.
Of note also that the mobile operators will have iPhone 11 Pro in their offer. Currently, however, only Iliad has some information. The rates are particularly advantageous.
iPhone 11 Pro sales
The first sales figures for the iPhone 11 Pro say that the phone was well received.
According to information released by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, indeed, the forecasts would have been too pessimistic. Apple may be able to sell 75 million new iPhones, 10% more than initial estimates.
