Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600
The Maybach brand also enters the luxury SUV sector, thus expanding its presence on the market after the sedans, coupes, convertibles and the eccentric Landaulet G-Class presented from 2014 to today. The choice fell on the largest Suv of the Star, or the GLS just passed to the new generation. Thus was born the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 4Matic, which makes its world premiere debut at the Guangzhou Motor Show. The launch on the main international markets is expected in the second half of 2020 and the German company hopes to overcome the flattering results already achieved with the S-Class, sold in 45,000 copies in four years and has become the choice of one customer out of seven of the flagship.
V8 mild hybrid for the flagship
The only engine available for the Maybach GLS is the V8 4.0 Biturbo petrol engine with 558 HP and 730 Nm of maximum torque. The engine boasts a specific tuning for this model and is combined with the 9G-Tronic automatic transmission, all-wheel drive, and the mild-hybrid EQ Boost system with 48 Volt system, which contributes with 22 HP and 250 Nm. The maximum speed is equal to 250 km / h, while 100 km / h from a standstill can be reached in 4.9 seconds despite a mass in running order of 2,785 kg. The average consumption, according to the still provisional Wltp values, is between 11.7 and 12.0 l / 100 km with 266-273 g / km of CO2 thanks also to the contribution of the deactivation of four of the eight cylinders to partial loads.
Air suspension and electric running board
To ensure maximum comfort for all passengers, the Mercedes-Maybach GLS is equipped with Airmatic suspension as standard, while E-Active Body Control with 48V system is available as an option, which controls each wheel individually and works in collaboration with the Road Surface Scan. The German technicians wanted to underline the soul of the model by inserting a new driving mode called Maybach, designed in particular for the comfort of the rear passengers, who can also count on an electrically removable aluminum running board 2.06 meters long to access the interior and the possibility of lowering the suspension by 25 mm when the doors are opened.
Chrome and two-tone with 23 “wheels
The aesthetic characterization of the GLS signed by Maybach is consistent with that already seen on the S-class cousin. The chromed strips of the mask are specific, as are the inserts with the same finish in the door sills and in the crystal frames. The sides are slim from the 22 “alloy wheels (23” in option) with specific design, also the tailpipes and the logos on the uprights are unique. In addition to the standard colors, eight two-tone paint variants are available: cavansite blue/iridium silver, designo bright white diamond/obsidian black, iridium silver / bright designo white diamond, iridium silver/selenite gray, obsidian black / Kalahari gold, obsidian black / Patagonia red, obsidian black / rubellite red and emerald green / Mojave silver.
Princely space at the rear
The interiors reflect the great attention to detail typical of the Maybach brand. Despite the 5.2 meters in length and the 3.13 meters of the wheelbase, it was chosen not to offer the third row of seats, thus maximizing the space available to the rear passengers. The partition with the luggage compartment and the parcel shelf are fixed to increase soundproofing (keeping space for 525 liters) and the sofa is set back 120 mm compared to the other versions of the GLS. The two electrically adjustable seats can recline up to 43.5 degrees and adopt the removable leg rests, it is also possible to replace the third central place with a fixed console equipped with folding tables, mini-bar and silver glasses. By moving the right front seat in driver mode, the rear passenger can count on 1.34 meters of legroom. The panoramic roof, the Multibeam Led light units, the Burmeister Premium sound system and the Nappa leather upholstery with kissed fold motifs are offered as standard, while the optional features include the 11.6 “MBux displays for the rear passengers, the Adas plus package with assistance for column driving, the Air-Balance fragrance diffuser, the set of coordinated cushions, the 3D audio system with 27 speakers and the bidirectional In-Car Communication.
Two-tone leather and exclusive woods
The internal upholstery is available in magma gray/black and mahogany brown/latte macchiato beige, to which the designo white crystal/silver gray pearl version with rose gold stitching inspired by the nautical world will be added later. Also for woods, there are some special optional processes: the one called designo flowing lines glossy lacquered black takes up the pinstripe theme of the front mask with clear lines similar to inlays obtained with a specific cutter, while the one called designo glossy light lines lime wood is combined with polycarbonate in a vertically cut mixed structure with a total thickness of 0.6 mm.
