Coronavirus: prevention tips
The transmission of the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 occurs mainly through the droplets of saliva which can pass from person to person speaking at very close distance, but also coughing or sneezing or using contaminated hands.
Taking simple protective measures is essential and it would be advisable to do it every time you have cooled down or you have the flu, we talk about it together with dr. Michele Lagioia, Medical Director of Humanitas.
Washing your hands eliminates the virus
Washing your hands with soap and water eliminates the virus and prevents infection. Hands should be washed by rubbing them carefully for at least 20 seconds, particularly after touching potentially dirty objects and surfaces, before bringing them to the face, eyes, and mouth. Where it is not possible to wash your hands with soap and water, a 60% alcohol-based hand sanitizer can be used.
Keep the right distance
It is advisable to keep at least one meter away from other people, especially if they have a cough, cold or fever because the virus can be transmitted at close range.
Clean the surfaces
Although still being studied, preliminary data suggest that the virus can survive on surfaces for a few hours. Coronavirus can be eliminated from surfaces using chemical disinfectants based on 1% bleach or chlorine, solvents, 75% alcohol (ethanol), peracetic acid and chloroform which kill the virus and thus cancel its ability to infect people.
Who should really wear the mask?
According to the indications of the World Health Organization, a mask must be worn:
- if you suspect that you have contracted the new Coronavirus and have symptoms such as coughing or sneezing.
- and caring for a person with suspected new Coronavirus infection.
The use of the mask alone is not sufficient to contain the spread of the virus but must accompany the respiratory and hand hygiene measures mentioned.
It is therefore not necessary to use the mask in the general population in the absence of symptoms of respiratory diseases.
How do you use the mask?
Before putting on the mask, wash your hands with soap and water or with a hand disinfectant; then cover the mouth and nose with the mask, making sure that the mask adheres well to the face.
Once worn, it is necessary to avoid touching it with your hands, if this happens you need to wash your hands. Once the mask is wet, it must be replaced: to remove it, take it from the elastic (avoiding touching the front) and immediately throw it in a closed bag, then wash your hands.
Do antibiotics prevent infection?
Antibiotics are not effective against viruses, but only in case of bacterial infection, therefore taking antibiotics to prevent new coronavirus infection is not recommended and harmful.
Are antiviral drugs useful in prevention?
No, there is currently no scientific evidence to demonstrate the effectiveness of antiviral drugs in preventing new coronavirus infection.
Respect for the law
Anyone of us must abide by the decisions and instructions addressed to us by the governments and security authorities of their country or the country in which they reside in order not to spread this epidemic even if the orders are tough, it is in everyone’s interest.
We pray to God
Finally, we pray and ask God to stop this disease and heal all the sick, we also ask God to help experts find the right medicine to fight this disease.
